He received his PhD in Sociology (specializations in medical sociology, systems of inequality, and critical gender and sexuality studies) in 2014. Prior to that, he received a B.A. (with honors) in Communication Studies and English (rhetoric) in 2008. When not facilitating the work of this project or teaching, you can find Ethan watching the latest sci-fi/fantasy shows (recent loves include Wheel of Time, Fallout, Good Omens, and Star Trek: Discovery), lifting heavy things at the gym, or checking out the local punk/scream/metal scene.

  • Director of Research & Development

Imoni Williams is a public health researcher pursuing her second master’s degree in Public Health at Central Michigan University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Health and a master’s degree in Health Administration, with professional experience working in local and state government environmental health.

She serves as the Director of Research and Development for the Sexploration Project, where she leads research design, methodological strategy, and knowledge translation. Imoni’s work sits at the intersection of public health, reproductive justice, sexual health, and sexual health policy. Grounded in Black feminist thought and shaped by experience in government and reproductive justice spaces, she approaches research as a justice-oriented, community-partnered practice focused on translating knowledge into meaningful change and impact.

Outside of her research, Imoni is a proud plant mom who loves traveling, creating new experiences, learning about other cultures, and engaging with the arts in all forms. To reach out individually and learn more about her work, you can find her on LinkedIn.

  • Director of Strategic Partnerships & Social Impact

Jason Schmidt Avendaño (He, Him, El) is an applied researcher specializing in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), social impact, and workforce development. As a Ph.D. Candidate in Social Neuroscience at the University of South Florida, his research investigates how chronic emotional experiences of both pride and prejudice shape emotional regulation at the neural level in LGBTQ+ individuals.

While his professional work centers on research and social impact, Jason’s personal life is grounded in creativity and self-expression through music, fashion, and movement. A professional singer and avid beach volleyball player, he performs and records music, creates upcycled clothing from reclaimed textiles, and spends his free time outdoors with goals that include winning a semi-professional volleyball tournament by 2026.
